Young Scolla – Good Ol’ Days Ft NAIRA (prod by SMKA)

Detroit rapper Young Scolla’s been on his grind longer than most—”Seconds Away” is his fifth release—but this airtight set, produced by SMKA, might finally be his moment. Scolla’s jazzy, melodic style, steeped in J. Dilla and Rawkus, dovetails nicely with today’s increasingly pop-oriented hip-hop mainstream, especially on tracks like “I Don’t Care,” on which Scolla and featured artist Skewby sound like a more soulful answer to Drake, or “Losin Myself,” which is as seductively smooth as Jay-Z rapping on a John Legend cut. Then there’s the amazing “Reflection,” on which Scolla and SMKA turn out a meditative, space-jazz jam that sounds like nobody else in the game. Clearly, Scolla is ready to graduate to the next level. – AH (Source)
