The mature themes in this French-language film, along with the work of reading the English subtitles and the age of the characters, make this drama an unlikely choice for family audiences. Adults however may find the insights in this unflinching look at the realities of the elderly are uncomfortably revealing at times, whether you are approaching that age or watching your parents do so.
"Vive l'Amour" was shown as part of last year's New Directors/New Films series. Following are excerpts from Stephen Holden's review, which appeared in The New York Times on March 23, 1995. The film, in Mandarin with English subtitles, opens today in Manhattan.

VIDEO and AUDIOAmour's 1.85:1 picture is a bit grainy, but otherwise clean, sharp, nicely-defined, and utterly filmlike. The static compositions pose no troubles whatsoever in 1080p. The 5.0 DTS-HD master audio doesn't do a lot you'll notice, but its presentation of the dialogue is flawless. More importantly, for most Americans, the white subtitles are clean, bold, and, though not always literal, accurate and grammatically sound.
