diane carmanNo matter how fast we run, we never catch upBy Diane CarmanDenver Post Columnist Sept. 19, 2000 - The debate over Olympic athletes as sex objects has been raging now for weeks. Are they being admired or demeaned, honored or exploited, liberated or oppressed Women athletes finally are getting noticed by the almighty sports media, but it should not be confused with coverage. Jenny Thompson, a powerful swimmer whose accomplishments alone should make her newsworthy, appeared topless in a recent Sports Illustrated, concealing her breasts provocatively with her hands. In Esquire, scantily clad high jumper Amy Acuff was featured spread-eagled in the throes of ecstasy over an especially satisfying, ahem, jump. The entire Australian women's soccer team got naked for Gear magazine. Maxim treated the Olympians like centerfold material. And Time's Canadian edition featured a cover photo of Olympian Waneek Horn-Miller, adorned with nothing but a strategically placed water polo ball. Some women will do anything for a little attention. Donna Lopiano, executive director of the Women's Sports Foundation, is outraged by the trend. \"Female athletes are no different than male athletes in the skill, dedication and courage they bring to their sports,\" she said in a commentary in the San Francisco Business Times. When they are depicted as sex objects, it reminds us yet again that \"sports culture is misogynistic.\" But Stacy Dragila, a champion pole vaulter who posed nude for a track and field calendar, told the New York Times that the women were baring their bodies not for titillation but to proudly display their strength and physical fitness. \"Don't insult my intelligence,\" responded Mary Jo Kane, director of the Tucker Center for Girls and Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota. \"It's not clear to me what muscle group their breasts belong to. Jenny Thompson didn't win five gold medals because she has nice breasts.\" Lopiano insists that \"when women play into such stereotypes, their power as athletes and executives is ultimately discounted or disregarded.\" If you doubt that, just imagine what would happen if Jenny Thompson or Amy Acuff someday wanted to run for the U.S. Senate. And then there's the \"role model\" argument - that it's tough enough for women athletes to be taken seriously without some Olympians behaving like porn stars. It sets everyone back. Even Nike, which once was acclaimed for its commercials that inspired little girls to athletic greatness, has stooped to snuff this year. An ad that aired over the weekend featured a woman athlete, pulling a shirt over her head after a workout. Suddenly a lunatic with a chainsaw cuts through her door to attack her. The woman, wearing only a jogging bra and running shorts, screams and sprints into the woods to escape the madman. The message: If you're in shape, \"you can live longer\" in a world full of dangerous psychopaths. The real message: No matter how fast we run, we can never catch up.E-mail Diane about this column.Copyright 2000 The Denver Post.
